I did something very similar and read the novel "Messiah" for the first time when I was 17, at home for the summer from university and alone in the house for a week while my parents were away.
In an old house at 3am, you'd be amazed how the wooden stairs creaking as they expand sounds just like a deranged serial killer trying to break in.
