Hyvää vappua!
So, it's May for the workers and the students alike. The fact has been duly celebrated by the means of an extravagant picnic in excellent company in the Kaivopuisto park with several thousands Helsinki residents. It seems to me that every year there'll be more and more food and drink. Like E said, we're only a couple of years away from putting up a pavilion, dragging a table and some chairs over there, and I wouldn't be too surprised if there was an actual butler serving us strawberries and whipped cream.Twenty years ago I spent the day marching for peace and the worker's rights with my parents, sang a few anthems and then it was time for potato salad and mead. The world changes. For better or for worse, I don't know, but change it does.
My face is sunburned and my tummy's full of delicacies. If one was to look for a downside, it almost has to be the kilogram of dust I've swallowed - dry sand paths combined with thousands of people adds up to blocked nose, sandy eyes and a funky throat. Oh well, the fun more than compensates for the sneezing.
May has to be one of my favourite months. April is strange, the first week is clearly a winter, days are short and there's still snow and then kaboom! it's 14 hours of daylight and the streets are full of confused people blinking at the suddenly appeared sun and trying to figure out a) who they are b) why are they here c) what's going on, and d) is it time to wake up yet? May, on the other hand, is almost summer. Heck, usually it's warmer than June! May is great.
I also had the job interview I mentioned a couple of weeks back. It was kinda weird because the interviewers were people I've worked with for more than 5 years but it was nevertheless a job interview. They promised to let us know the results either this week or the next so keep your fingers crossed. I'm not holding my breath as they told me that there had been plenty of applications (though I don't know how many people they interviewed) but I'm carefully optimistic. If I score I'll be promoted to a duty manager in a restaurant which will be re-opened after a long renovation in August.
